What is a solar sheet?

Solar sheets are the outermost "layer" for a solar panel, the first line of defense for solar cells. They play a critical role in protecting solar panels from harsh, varying environmental conditions over panel lifetimes.

In order to protect a panel for more than 25 years, a sheet must have the optimal balance of three critical properties: weatherability, mechanical strength and adhesion. These properties must be maintained over the service life of the module.

Bad quality solar sheet will occur catastrophic breakdown of panels, significant power degradation and severe safety hazards. The impact can be significant, ranging from severe brand and reputation losses to bodily harm.

Solar panel sheet materials have different styles: TPT solar sheet, TPE solar sheet, BBF solar sheet, APE solar sheet, EVA solar sheet.

TPT Solar sheet: TPT is a polyvinyl fluoride composite film. Strictly speaking, TPT is a three-layer composition film made from DuPont Tedlar. DuPont has made significant contributions to the study of fluorides. In addition, Gore's research is also prominent. Gore can be said to be a company spun off from DuPont. Tedlar is solely produced by DuPont.

TPE Solar sheet: This is a general term. It makes from thermoplastic elastomer which usually includes block copolymers (styrenic resins, copolyesters, polyurethanes, and polyamides), as well as blends and alloys of thermoplastic elastomers (thermoplastic polyolefins and thermoplastic vulcanizates). Among them, block copolymers are widely used especially styrenic resins and hydrogenated resins.

BBF Solar sheet: A composite of EVA+PET+THV. Generally, it is a three-layer co-extrusion. THV resin is a terpolymer from tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene, and vinylidene fluoride. It is the toughest fluoropolymer with highest level of optical transparency.

APE Solar sheet: A layer is a film which used nylon-12 to produce with comprehensive and excellent weather resistance. P is a middle layer modified polymer material alloy. Compared with traditional PET middle layers, it has better long-term hydrolysis resistance, water vapor barrier properties, and excellent electrical insulation properties; E layer is a modified polyolefin material that can be bonding of EVA encapsulant film with high resistance to ultraviolet radiation aging.

EVA Solar sheet: Ethylene-vinyl acetate resin. It has good flexibility, no stickiness at room temperature, and strong adhesion between sheet and glass at certain temperatures.

For above EVA solar sheet materials, it need tert-butyl ethyl carbonate peroxide (TBEC, 97%) to be a cross-linking agent. This is a clear colorless liquid and its' self-accelerating decomposition temperature (SADT) is 60°C. TBEC is easily soluble in alcohols, ethers, esters, and hydrocarbon organic solvents, insoluble in water. TBEC has to keep away from ignition sources, heat sources, avoid contact with reducing agents, acids, alkalis, and heavy metal compounds.
