What is Half-life?

**Half-life** refers to the time it takes for an organic peroxide to decompose to half of its original amount at a certain temperature. Like nuclear decay, organic peroxides decompose slowly at any temperature, but the higher the temperature, the faster the decomposition rate. For TBPB (Tert-Butyl Peroxybenzoate), the known data are:

- At 167°C, the half-life is 1 minute.

- At 125°C, the half-life is 1 hour.

- At 103°C, the half-life is 10 hours.

These data show that even if the temperature does not reach SADT, a small amount of decomposition will occur at higher temperatures. Since this decomposition is an exothermic reaction, improper storage conditions (such as high temperature environment or long-term storage) may gradually lead to a dangerous situation even if the initial temperature does not exceed the SADT.https://www.kz-opchem.com/organic-peroxides/tertial-butyl-peroxybenzoate.html
