Peroxides are compounds containing peroxy-O-O-O -. It can be seen as a derivative of hydrogen peroxide, characterized by the presence of peroxide ions (O) in the molecule. Peroxides include metal peroxides, hydrogen peroxide, Peroxy acid acid salts and Organic peroxides. Metal peroxides can be formed by the elements of the groups IA, IIA, IIIB, and IVB in the periodic table, as well as certain transition elements such as copper, silver, and mercury.

The preparation methods include:

① Active metals (such as sodium) burn in oxygen.

② Dissolve active metals (such as potassium) in liquid ammonia and introduce oxygen.

③ Hydrogen peroxide reacts with salt. Metal peroxides are strong oxidizing agents that release oxygen upon heating and react with dilute acids to produce hydrogen peroxide.

Usage: Metal peroxides are used in the textile and paper industries as bleaching agents. One or two hydrogens in hydrogen peroxide are replaced by organic groups, and the resulting compounds are called Organic peroxides, such as peracetic acid and Cumene peroxide. They have stronger oxidizing properties than metal peroxides and are flammable and explosive compounds that can be used as agents, disinfectants, and bleaches.
